 Facility Performance Evaluation
POE Contest Entry for Richard Steuber

Question:   How Can Post Occupancy Evaluation help you or DGS do a better job?

Our valued customers, upon hearing of our endeavor, will recall the great Churchill and share and admonish us, yes "( you) shape our buildings" (but please remember) " thereafter they shape us."

For our part, we'll anxiously eavesdrop the commuters on light rail, hoping never to hear the Roman Seneca's lament "Believe me, that was a happy age, before the days of architects, before the days of builders."

Our post occupancy evaluations ( by their nature a glimpse of history ) will reinforce with clarity , Henry David Thoreau's notion that "if you've built your castles in the air, your work need not be lost, now put the foundations under them". But seriously RESD, lets do this before the tenants move in.

Oh, and while we're exercising some caution in our approach, lets all carry little cards in our wallet with Nancy Banks Smith's observation that……." if you have to keep the lavatory door shut, by extending your left leg, it's modern architecture."

We will come away from our evaluations in sympathy with the modern Ralph Erskine, sensitive that "the job of buildings is to improve human relations: architecture must ease them, not make them worse." Whether we DO anything with this sympathy , is of course the question.

Our POE's will, finally, lend credence to Joseph Addison's insight , when he said "Many actions, calculated to procure fame, are not conducive to ultimate happiness" (particularly if you've neglected ample parking, provision for personal security, nearby shopping and access to public transit) ((largely, in that order )).
