 Facility Performance Evaluation
POE Contest Entry for Chris Wicks

Question:   How Can Post Occupancy Evaluation help you or DGS do a better job?

  • Have you ever gotten a call from an agency about a project you completed and are asked about warranty issues?
  • Have you ever stopped by a project you completed and been barraged with numerous questions about design, installation, or operation items?
  • Have you ever wondered if the design elements that were recommended and approved were valid and worthwhile?
  • Have you ever wondered where you can find out about other projects and their relative success or failure?

If you have, then a POE will help you. It has a format that encourages the users of the building to provide an evaluation of the building and their recommendations for improvement. It addresses separate areas of interest so that the persons performing the evaluation can quickly go to their area(s) of interest and perform the evaluation in an efficient and timely manner. It promotes an honest and frank evaluation of the overall success or failure of the building from the user's point of view. If done during the warranty period it can provide a source for warranty/guarantee items that need to be addressed and completed before the warranty runs out. It can provide details to support the need for special repairs. It can be used to compile a database so problems are not repeated on future projects of a similar nature. It can be used as a source of information on the performance of the design team and/or the contractor's team.

The POE can be an essential tool toward improving the satisfaction of DGS's client agencies by providing a forum for listening to their concerns and recommendations. This in turn helps you toward a successful project, and the continued respect of your client.
